Iyali Foods: A Little Bit About Its Founder Seyi Albert

Seyi Albert is the Founder at Iyali Foods. Seyi considers himself a techie and a foodie. The founder worked five years in the digital media space before launching Iyali Foods. He was also the Social Media Lead for the Buhari Campaign. He first got the idea for Iyali Foods in 2013. Seyi experimented with the idea under a different name before he launched it fully about a year ago. His grandparents were farmers and his Dad used to do the grocery shopping unlike most African homes. Seyi’s paternal grandmother owned a restaurant which probably explains why his Dad did the grocery shopping.

 

Iyali Foods: Making Farm Fresh Food Accessible

Iyali is an Hausa word which means family.  The startup’s goal is to make affordable food easily accessible. It takes off the stress of going to the market to do your grocery shopping. At the initial stage, clients could send their grocery shopping list via Whatsapp. The list would specify the quantity and sizes of the grocery items. The startup founder would then proceed to issue them an electronic invoice. After payment is finalized, delivery of the items will take place. The prices for the groceries are affordable. They are the same as you would get at your farmer’s market.

The food items Iyali Foods delivers ranges from vegetables to vegetable oil. The startup has access to variants of popular food items Nigerians consume. They have access to about four types of cabbages, lettuces etc. The food categories available on Iyali Foods include; Fruits, Tuber, Vegetables, Grain, Pepper, Herbs, Meat & Fish.

 

Iyali Foods: Ensuring Optimum Food Security In Nigeria

Iyali Foods helps farmers prevent food wastage due to logistical challenges. The startup has built a logistical network that delivers to its clients on time. It is able to source farm produce from farmers & related partners who are far from its end consumers. Many of whom are based in Lagos State. It sources from partners in Jos, Plateau State and other parts of Nigeria.

Eventions: A Brief Profile Of The Founder; Lami Attah

Lami Attah has a Mathematics and Computer Science background. She fell in love in technology through computer games and similar gadgets. Lami Attah liked the idea of building computer programs. She studied at the Federal University of Technology, Niger State, Nigeria. Her undergraduate thesis was in E-commerce at a time when the field was non-existent in the country.

In 2014, Lami Attah launched Eventions.ng, an online gifting solution focused on delivering orders in Nigeria. This was more than 7 years after she studied the field. The Nigerian E-commerce industry has since come of age in the past few years with pace setters like Konga, Jumia, DealDey etc.

 

Here Are The Gift Items You Can Find On Eventions

The platform currently has a wide range of gift items. Anyone who design gifts or has a gifting business can also sell on Eventions. Buyers can send Made In Nigeria gifts to friends or loved ones abroad. Nigerians in Diaspora can also send gifts to their relatives in Nigeria. As an example, the startup has delivered flowers to a person in Ondo State, Nigeria. This was done in less than 6 hours.

Gift items include food, hampers, pens, mugs etc. The startup has also helped clients mend their relationships. Its most popular gift item in the last 6 months has been a pair of socks. The socks is called the “mumu button” (soft spot in Nigerian lingo) socks. They have been highly patronized by Nigerian women. The socks are gifted to men by these women. Another bestseller on Eventions.ng is its football team mugs. Buyers can have their names and football teams or those of their loved ones printed on them.

 

Some Special Features Of The Eventions Platform

Buyers can find gifts for as low as 1,500 Naira on Eventions.ng. There are gifts for people of all ages and social status. Eighty percent of Eventions’ clients are women. The startup has also realized that many of its buyers shop from their mobile devices. Its mobile app will be available for use soonest.

Buyers can build a hamper on the platform. Another feature available is customization. Users can customize gifts on the website. They can add names, photographs etc. Clients can also save special dates (like birthdays etc). on the platform. This implies you can buy gift items in advance for your loved one. Drinks.ng Wants To Deliver Your Liquor Orders To You At Anytime Of The Day

If you live in any part of Nigeria, there are typically two ways to get beverages (these include alcoholic & non-alcoholic). You either walk into a store to pick them up or call a vendor.  Drinks.ng is making this process easier for everyone. The four-year-old drinks ordering platform will deliver at any time on Lagos Island, Nigeria. It currently runs a 24-hour service in Africa’s most valuable startup ecosystem.

Drinks.ng: A Brief Profile Of The Founder

LanreAkinlagun studied Marketing & Mass Communication at the London Metropolitan University. He fell in love with technology during his time at University. He got his first job after University at Universal Pictures. As part of his portfolio, he had the task of understanding the digital space and its implications for traditional business models.This task was the start of his journey in the digital marketing space. He later moved to join Vizeum, a digital marketing agency.

Although he is not a developer, Lanre considers himself as a techie from a digital marketing point of view. He has spent the past 12-13 years in the digital marketing space.

 

Drinks.ng: Here’s How It All Started

He first got the idea to start Drinks.ng when he was asked to purchase drinks for a wedding. Lanre was frustrated as there was no single place to get all the drinks he needed. He was advised to either go to the open market or call ‘a certain guy’.  According to Lanre, everyone had a certain guy you could call. He started Drinks.ng to make it easier for consumers to get the drinks they want in any quantity. The startup’s goal is to help consumers get authentic drinks at competitive prices.

 

“Our Beverages At Drinks.ng Are Authentic” – Lanre Akinlagun

Consumers ordering from the platform should be rest assured of the authenticity of the beverages. Drinks.ng works directly with all the manufacturers of the major brands.  They include MOET Hennessy, PernodRicard, Diageo etc.According to Lanre, the startup has a solid relationship with all of the major manufacturers. One proof of the solid relationship is the fact that some of them have taken the Founder on trips across the world. For example, Lanre has visited the Champagne and Cognac regions in France courtesy some of the manufacturers.

Additionally, the startup has great deals from time to time. For example, if a consumer orders two bottles of MOET, they could get two bottles of mini MOET. The startup also gives out goody bags when they get invited for interviews.

 

 

“Drinks.ng Has Got Footprints Across Nigeria” – LanreAkinlagun

The organization currently deliversdrinks to 24 states across Nigeria. Keep in mind that there are 36 states in Nigeria. Consumers outside Lagos can order as little as one bottle. Drinks.ng has an office in Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria. The startup is also opening its Port Harcourt (the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria) office soonest.Drinks.ng also delivers beverages to events, clubs, etc. at any hour of the day on Lagos Island. The organization will get drinks to any part of Eastern Nigeria within 48 – 72 hours. It plans to be present across the whole of West Africa in the next 3 – 5 years.

According to LanreAkinlagun, there are typically three major reasons why people outside Lagos order drinks from them. First, their local vendor’s prices are slightly higher than Drinks.ng. Secondly, they are unable to get those drinks in their region. Finally, they have had a bad experience with their local vendor in the past.

Drinks.ng currently has a magazine called ‘Spirit’. The magazine features brand ambassadors from the beverage industry. It also contains informational and educative pieces about the beverage/liquor industry. There is also a catalogue of all the products you can get in Nigeria and where to get them.

Social Lender Is Seeking To Help Low Income Earners In Africa Get Access To Formal Credit

Nigeria’s fintech industry is not only buzzing with innovative solutions, it is changing how we live and do business. One of such innovative solutions is Social Lender. Faith History spoke with Bade Adesemowo, Co-founder & CTO (Chief Technology Officer) at Social Lender, listen to the interview here. Bade Adesemowo is a techie who started off with website development seventeen years ago. He handles software development and everything technology at Social Lender. The CEO (Chief Executive Officer), Faith Adesemowo, has an investment banking background.

 

Social Lender: Here’s A Brief Background About The Startup

Social Lender piloted its product in 2014 with Sterling Bank. However, the startup officially launched in Nigeria in January 2015. After successfully testing and validating the solution, Sterling Bank took it live. The pilot was crucial as there was no similar solution at the time in Nigeria.

While Sterling Bank currently provides the funds in Nigeria, the startup has gone on to launch in South Africa. It launched in South Africa through Barclays Bank (ABSA Bank). The organization is looking to launch in Ghana in the nearest future. It is however worthy of note that the funds in Nigeria are not only available to Sterling Bank account holders. Non account-holders can also receive the loans. This was initially impossible in the first year the product launched.

 

Social Lender: Loans Are Given Based On Social Reputation

Social Lender helps banks lend money to people based on their social reputation. This includes social media footprint, mobile reputation etc. The social reputation score is not only based on an individual’s social profile. It also assesses the profile of a user’s social guarantor.  The premise for the startup is the fact that every individual has a digital footprint. This is available either on social media or via your telephone contacts. This implies that reputation score is available for individuals who do not have a social media account.

The startup provides the technology that enables banks assess an individual’s social reputation. The individual can then use the reputation to borrow money from banks. Individuals can get a maximum of 100,000 Naira ($277) using their social reputation score. Once a social audit has been conducted, the loan will be paid into the users bank account within ten minutes. The organization is looking to increase the funds to up to 1 million in a few years’ time. One important fact Mr. Adesemowo mentioned (in this interview) was that the platform has a bad debt ratio of 4%. This is in comparison to the average of 10% – 20% in Nigeria. Essentially more than 95% of borrowers are paying up their loans. This proves that the algorithm works.

 

Social Lender: Here’s Why The Solution Is Very Important

The startup’s solution caters to more than 50% of adult Nigerians who lack access to credit. It provides a means to prove their credit worthiness which is one of the barriers to accessing funds.  People use the loans from Social Lender for emergency needs, small scale business capital etc. This has a ripple effect as it goes on to increase economic prosperity.

The startup is also set to launch its USSD platform with its eyes set on low-income earners. It recently signed a partnership with CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor). The partnership will involve exploring how social data can predict the loan repayment behavior of low-income earners. The pilot program will also provide loans to low-income earners. Chinedu Azodoh is one of the Co-founders at MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress). He is also the Chief Technology Officer. The other Co-founder is Adedayo Bamiduro. Chinedu spoke with Faith History in this interview about what his organization is doing to help retail businesses in Nigeria attain their full potential.

Chinedu Azodoh started off his career in Technology before he later got into Logistics. He attended Loyola College and then moved on to Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO). Chinedu got a part scholarship to attend University in the United States of America two years into his programme at FUTO.

He studied for a dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.  He later worked for a number of years at Barclays as a software engineer upon graduation in 2012. Chinedu then went on to attend business school at Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT) with a concentration in Finance.

He decided he was going to set-up MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) after he graduated from MIT.  Today, the startup he helped set-up has grown from nine (9) riders in January 2016 to about one hundred and twenty (120) riders.

 

What Exactly Does MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) Do?

The startup is a mobility company that handles both deliveries and transportation. It connects a network of professional motorcycle riders with businesses and individuals that need them. The startup focuses on intra-state deliveries and transportation. MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) guarantees delivery in less than three hours within Lagos and any other city it operates in.

Users can download the MAX (Metro Africa Xpress) app in the Google Play or Apple App Store. The platform provides real-time tracking so that customers know where their riders are at any given time. The startup currently operates in only Lagos. It is planning to expand to other cities across Africa in the coming year.

 

How MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) Ensures Its Riders Are Of High Quality

For the transport service, MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) ensures riders undergo a psychometric test. Riders take a written test before joining the network. The platform creates a profile for riders and grades them accordingly. The motorcycles used by riders are such that meet the regulatory requirements. These bikes are typically more expensive than the regular motorcycles. MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) works with financial institutions and individuals to provide credit to would-be-riders. This is to enable them get the required motorcycles. Riders can then pay back the cost of the bike over a stipulated time-frame.

 

Here’s How It Ensures Its Trips Are Safe

Customers can use the MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) app to place a delivery or transport request. The cost of using a MAX.ng (Metro Africa Xpress) motorcycle to move within the city is significantly lower than the regular options. Riders are also not allowed to break speed limits. Customers also get a helmet and hairnet from the rider before their trips. Riders provide a raincoat to customer if it’s raining. The trips are insured and there is money kept aside should an accident occur. The riders follow the necessary regulations which increase the safety of their trips. They are not allowed to pick up more than one customer. This is the cause of 60% of motorcycle accidents on Lagos roads according to Chinedu Azodoh.

Aella Credit: Three Takeaways From Faith History’s Interview With Akin Jones

Akin Jones quit his job as Head of Investment Banking Group at a financial services company to start Aella Credit. Aella Credit is an online platform that enables people to access loans instantly. Akin holds a degree from Howard University in Washington DC, USA. He also attended the famous Kings College, Lagos.

Faith History interviewed Akin Jones more than a year ago. Here are the major takeaway from the interview:

 

Akin Jones: Aella Credit Rewards Its Customers To Borrow More

Five years of market data drive the lending platform. Better borrowers were identified using the data. Borrowers get rewarded for the loans they request for. The organization rewards borrowers in order to get them to request more loans. The startup not only provides the platform they also provide the loans. This is as opposed to partnering with lending companies. The goal according to Mr. Jones, as at a year ago, is to get lending companies on the platform in the nearest future. This will make Aella Credit a marketplace of lenders and not just a lender.

The platform is integrated with the major credit bureaus in Nigeria. This allows Aella Credit analyze the debt to income profile of prospective borrowers, social demographic information etc. It is tough to get a loan from the startup according to Mr. Jones. Prospective borrowers must scale eighty percent of its verification process.

 

Akin Jones: Aella Credit Didn’t Do Any Marketing When They Launched

Many of Aella Credit’s customers were based in Lagos as at the time of its pilot. During this time it partnered with about twelve companies in Nigeria. The partner companies gave them access to about five hundred thousand borrowers.  The additional borrowers they acquired were people who applied on their website. They didn’t have to do any marketing as there was high demand for their product. Essentially, everybody needs money! The startup gave out a thousand loans within six months of launching the platform. The value of the loans given out at the time was $800,000.

 

Akin Jones: Loans Are A Fundamental Human Right

Their analytics revealed that the greatest need for loans were housing, healthcare and education. Mr. Jones believes that loans are a fundamental human right. Consequently, there should be the creation of platforms that make it easier to access them. The startup is working with tech developers to ensure their processes are more seamless. At the time of the interview, they were planning to launch their mobile app. Looks like they have achieved that goal already. The startup has even gone on to attract more funding.

According to Mr. Jones, if you want to start an online solution, you either need to get a technical co-founder or a consultant. As regarding people who inspire him, he mentioned the team at Venture Garden Group, Tayo Oviosu and Abiola Olaniran of Gamsole. In Mr. Jones’ view Abiola proves that local talent can achieve great things if given the same opportunity as foreign talent.

YouTube Nigeria: Three Key Takeaways From Faith History’s Interview With Teju Ajani

Teju Ajani: No need to complain about lack of data

There is a presently a feature in the YouTube app that allows you watch videos later. The feature is called YouTube Offline. It allows you save a video to view when you don’t have data. You can also save this video for up to 48 hours. The video refreshes when you return back online.

However, this feature is not available in all countries. The feature is also not available for all videos. This YouTube Help page lists about sixteen countries where the feature is available. Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa are on the list among others.

 

Teju Ajani: There are videos on YouTube about YouTube

Surprise, surprise, right? Not exactly! For people looking for help on how to use YouTube, there are videos on the platform about it. There is a YouTube Creator academy. It teaches how to create a YouTube channel, how to succeed on the platform etc. The YouTube Creator Academy contains videos from successful users of the platform. The Academy has a video channel on the platform with short video snippets on these topics. Alternatively, you can simply ‘Google’ whatever questions you have about using YouTube.

Users can always go back to enable monetization if they missed it the first time. You can do this on the dashboard displayed when you log in to your account on YouTube. There are rules and regulations that you have to agree to before you enable monetization. You will need to connect your YouTube account to Adsense.

You can only make money when people watch your video. The more people that watch your videos the more money you make. When you enable monetization, ads are placed on your content. Advertisers can match their ads to specific content. You don’t get paid if people skip the ad on your videos. Advertisers only pay for ads if viewers watch them. Ads can be placed under your video or beside it. This is managed by the Adsense system.

How To Upload An Image or Video To Instagram On Your Laptop Using Gamblr

As you may already know we like to make your life easier with digital tips and tricks. We bring you tools we discover from time to time. One of such is Gamblr. Gamblr is a desktop application that lets you upload photos to Instagram from your laptops, personal computers and Macbook.

Sometimes you have a photo or photos on your desktop computer which you would like to upload to your Instagram profile. You might not want to go through the stress of transferring it to your phone first. Perhaps you lost your phone or just have quite a number of photos that are not on your phone. Gamblr is a great application to do this. There are a couple of others e.g. Deskgram etc. You can log in to your account via the Instagram website on a desktop computer but can’t upload photos.

So let’s dive straight into the steps, ready? Here we go!

Gamblr Step 1: Download and Install the Application

This was obvious right? Yeah yeah! It was still worth mentioning. Go to the website and download which ever one applies to you. Next you will need to install the executable (.exe) file you have downloaded. To install double-click on the .exe file. Once it begins, take a short stroll or go get a glass of water.

Now that you are back, we can move on to the next step.

 

Gamblr Step 2: Load the application and sign-up

The application should either be in your Start menu list or on your Desktop environment. Double-click on any of them to load the application. The application will prompt you to sign-up.

You should see something like this:

Gamblr Step 3: Sign into the application and click Upload Now

By now you already have an account and have linked your Instagram profile. Simply sign into the application and you will see an environment with different buttons and links. Click on “Upload Now” on the right of the environment. See image below:

Gamblr Step 4: Click on the Drag and Drop Box

You will then need to click on the Drag and Drop image box to select the image you want to upload. The image for upload should be saved where you can easily access it. This makes it quicker to drag and drop the image on Gamblr.

 

Gamblr Step 5: Set the Properties for Your Image

The next steps of screens allow you set different properties for your image. You will be prompted to select the size you want, add filters or motions. If you are unsure what size to choose, just select 1:1 and click “Save”. The next page after you save size prompts you to filter your image or apply motions to it. If you would like your image to appear as is, click “Continue”. The next page to be displayed is the “Caption” page which leads us to Step 6.

Gamblr Step 6: Type in Caption and Tag People

Simply type in your caption in the page displayed after you have carried out Step 5. Here is where you enter all your hashtags etc. Right beneath your image you can tag whoever you want to tag. Just enter their Instagram username if you remember it.

Gamblr Step 7: Choose When To Post Image and Click Send/Schedule As The Case May Be

This is the final step! Gamblr lets you choose when to upload an image or video. You can send immediately or “some other time”. With “some other time”, you can schedule posts (See image below). Whatever you choose to do, clicking the send button publishes the post whether immediately or later. The con of scheduling posts with Gamblr is that you have to be online with the app at the scheduled time for it to publish the post.

Conclusion

It’s worth noting that nothing beats using the Instagram mobile app. Other apps are not as secure and great as the Instagram mobile app. Only use Gamblr and other apps when you absolutely need to. Apps like Gamblr will come in handy at such times. Do your best to avoid the free likes, gaining followers and coins. Ensure you have your anti-virus updated and working properly. Also read the Gamblr terms and conditions and be sure you are fine with them before downloading the app.
