Mr. Okada, Gidi Run, Anointed, Monkey Post, Yoruba 101 and Aboki Run. One thing these names all have in common is this; they are all Made In Nigeria games. In other words Game Companies in Nigeria created them. There are not so many of them but there are quite a number worthy of mention. The gaming industry it appears seems to be growing. It shouldn’t be surprising, games are a big deal! The global games industry was worth $99 billion in 2016. While the mobile sub-sector was worth close to half of that at $36.9 billion.
If you looked at the Nigerian gaming industry about ten years ago it would appear deserted. With the growth of internet penetration and focus on creating local content, a number of these game startups began to come on the scene. We take a look at some of them in this article.

Bison Play created the Mr. Okada game app
The Mr. Okada game app was put together by BisonPlay. The company is a game and media development company. Tobias Ighofose and David Sewell founded the company after they met while working in London. Additionally, the game features Toks Asher, a Nigerian music industry expert, as the major player character. In the game, Toks Asher is on a mission to achieve his dream of becoming a musician. Gamesole made the Gidi Run game app
Gidi Run is one of Nigeria’s indigenous game apps. Gamesole is the creator of the app. Gamesole is a Nigerian-based mobile game production startup. Abiola Olaniran is the Founder of the startup. He earned his first degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. Additionally, he won the Nigerian edition of the Microsoft Imagine Cup in 2010. Gidi Run is quite similar to Subway Surfers only that you get to run on Lagos’ streets. Furthermore, a player can choose to be a bus conductor, policeman or perhaps a commercial bus driver. Yinola is the Creator of Anointed
Yinola is a mobile content development startup based in Nigeria. Its Founder is Yinka Iyinolakan. The startup made the Anointed Game app. Additionally, the game is also called Chronicles of Laftu. The major character as the name implies is Laftu. Laftu is on a quest to conquer all evil using excerpts from the Bible. Furthermore, the game is cross-platform and also for every age. Chopup created the game Monkey Post
Monkey Post is a popular version of the football game loved by many Nigerian children. To play it on a mobile phone is definitely something to look forward to. Apparently, Chopup, a Nigerian mobile gaming company has made it possible. The startup’s focus is developing locally relevant games that tell the African narrative. Adventures of Baba Lasisi and Jagun were also made by the startup. Furthermore, users can subscribe with as little as =N=20 ($0.06) weekly to play all its games for free!
Zubair Abubakar and Bayo Puddicombe are Founders of Chopup’s parent company Pledge 51. Additionally, they received $100k investment from five investors in 2014. The gaming startup also recorded about 120,000 sign ups with 10 percent conversion rates according to this report in 2014. We don’t yet know what the numbers look like today. However, given the addictive nature of games the numbers should look way better.

Maliyo Games is the brain behind Aboki Run
Maliyo Games was founded by Hugo Obi in April 2012. It is arguably Nigeria’s first online gaming company. Hugo studied Computer Engineering at the University of Benin. He also has degrees from the Manchester Business School, UK and Nanyang Business School, Singapore. Maliyo went from a mobile content development startup to a mobile content discovery platform.
The Aboki Run game is also similar to Subway Surfer, it is an endless runner game. Players try to help three young friends, Danjuma, Gbenga and Chinedu, discover more about their ancestral home. The games was launched on the Play store in December 2016. There were over 50k downloads of the game as at December 2016 according to this article. Additionally, the game features African themed environment. This includes, cave, forest etc.

Genii Games created the Yoruba 101 game
Genii Games is the mother company of the Asa brand. Asa is a collection of exciting apps and videos that teach children about the African culture. Asa means culture in Yoruba. Some features of the Asa collection are games, animation, voice, text and beautiful graphics. Furthermore, the collection covers subjects such as languages, folktales, ethics and etiquette. Users can access the apps on iOS, Android and BlackBerry.
Yoruba 101 is one of the apps in the Asa collection. It is a fun and educative app that helps users learn the basics of the Yorùbá Language. Additionally, it does this using over a dozen lessons. Users can also play games to test their knowledge. Adebayo Adegbembo founded Genii Games in 2012. It is one of the startups in the Co-Creation Hub portfolio. It also won the Etisalat Pan-African Prize for Most Innovative Product in 2013.
